Advisory · multi-year roadmaps and budgets
A technology roadmap and budget that follow your business plan.
We turn the business plan into a technology plan: the capabilities the business will need, the systems that provide them, the order to build them in, and the budget for each year, with architecture blueprints and continuity plans behind it. Leadership gets a roadmap it can fund and track, and the technology team gets a direction it can work to.
What you get
What is included in Strategic Technology Planning
A roadmap from the business plan
The business's goals translated into the capabilities and systems that deliver them, in a sensible order.
Multi-year budget
Capital and running costs by year, with the assumptions written down, so that finance can plan.
Architecture blueprints
How the systems fit together now and where they are heading, in a form that teams and vendors can work from.
Skills and enablement
The people and skills the plan needs, and how to build or buy them.
Continuity and redundancy
What must keep working, what the plan is when it does not, and what it costs to be ready.
Governance and review
How progress is tracked, who decides what, and when the plan is reviewed.
Is it the right one?
Where it fits, and where it does not
We would rather you choose the right thing than the one we happen to be discussing.
A strong fit when
- The business is planning growth, acquisitions or new sites, and technology must keep pace.
- Technology spending is decided project by project, with no overall plan.
- Several major systems are due for renewal at the same time.
- The board or the lender wants to see a plan.
Look at something else when
- You need a decision on one purchase: IT Consulting is the closer fit.
- You need a review of what you have first: begin with Technology Assessment, which feeds the plan.
- You want a plan the business has not agreed with: the plan only works if leadership owns it, so we involve them from the start.
How we run it
How we run Technology Planning
Every engagement runs in phases, so the business sees progress and risks surface early. The timescale for each phase is set after an assessment, not before.
Understand the plan
Work with leadership to see what the business intends, and what that asks of technology.
Establish the baseline
Take stock of what exists, what it costs and what condition it is in.
Define the target
Describe the capabilities and the architecture the business needs.
Sequence the work
Order the projects by value, risk and dependency, and group them into years.
Budget
Put costs against each step, with the assumptions and the range, and agree the plan with finance.
Review
Set the cadence for tracking progress and revisiting the plan as the business moves.
Questions we are asked
Technology Planning: questions and answers
How far ahead should a technology plan look?
Far enough to include the big items, such as system renewals, usually a few years, but detailed only for the next year or so. A plan is reviewed regularly, because the business and the technology both change.
Do we need an assessment first?
Usually, or at least a baseline. A plan needs to start from what you actually have. If you already have a good picture, we use it; if not, we do a lighter version of a Technology Assessment first.
Who is involved from our side?
Leadership and finance above all, and the people who run the systems. A plan that only the IT team has seen tends not to be funded.
