Core ERP · cloud, dedicated (single-tenant)
SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition: your own S/4HANA, operated by SAP.
SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition gives you a dedicated, single-tenant S/4HANA system that SAP hosts and operates. You keep much of the flexibility of the on-premise product, including broader customization and a say in the pace of change, while SAP takes on the infrastructure and technical operations. It is a separate product from the Public Edition and from SAP S/4HANA (on-premise), and a common way for organizations to move from SAP ECC without running the infrastructure themselves.
Capabilities
What SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition covers
The full S/4HANA scope
Finance, supply chain, manufacturing, sales and service, with industry solutions, on the same suite as the on-premise product.
Infrastructure SAP operates
SAP hosts and operates the platform, including the database, backups and availability, so your team is not running servers.
A route from SAP ECC
System conversion and new-implementation paths, with tools to assess custom code and data readiness before you commit.
Custom processes and add-ons
Room for your own developments and certified add-ons, guided by clean-core principles so upgrades stay manageable.
Integration and extension on SAP BTP
APIs, events and side-by-side applications on SAP BTP, which the Private Edition is commonly bundled with.
Security and compliance by design
Role design, segregation of duties and audit controls built into the project, on infrastructure that SAP operates.
Which S/4HANA?
Three different products, side by side
SAP S/4HANA, SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition and SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition are not one product in three wrappers. They differ in who runs them, how far they can be customized and how updates arrive.

Is it the right one?
Where it fits, and where it does not
We would rather you choose the right thing than the one we happen to be discussing.
A strong fit when
- You run SAP ECC and want to reach S/4HANA without owning the infrastructure.
- You need custom developments or industry solutions that the Public Edition's model does not allow.
- You want one accountable operator for the infrastructure, and a controlled timetable for upgrades.
- Your group wants a flexible central ERP and may add Public Edition systems for subsidiaries later.
Look at something else when
- Your processes are near standard and you want the least change and the fastest adoption: look at the Public Edition.
- You must run the system yourself, for policy or data-residency reasons: SAP S/4HANA on-premise is the fit.
- You are a smaller company: SAP Business One or SAP Business ByDesign usually fit better.

Questions we are asked
S/4HANA Cloud Private: questions and answers
How does the Private Edition differ from the Public Edition?
Both are cloud products, but the Private Edition is a dedicated system with broader customization and a pace of change you agree with SAP. The Public Edition is a shared, standardized system that SAP updates for everyone on a fixed schedule. Our comparison on the SAP overview page sets them side by side.
Is it the same as RISE with SAP?
RISE with SAP is SAP's commercial offer, which most often bundles the Private Edition with technical services and SAP BTP. The Private Edition is the S/4HANA product at its heart. We help you evaluate the offer and plan the move.
Can we still keep a clean core?
Yes, and we recommend it. Because the Private Edition allows custom code, the discipline has to come from design: extend on SAP BTP or in the supported ways wherever possible, and record every exception.
