Mobile applications · iOS and Android

Mobile apps for the people who work and buy away from a desk.

We build iOS and Android apps for field staff, customers, loyalty schemes and approvers: scanning stock, capturing work orders, approving requests on the move, or letting customers order and track. We build once for both platforms where that is the right choice, connect the app to your systems, and design it to keep working when the signal does not.

Capabilities

What Mobile Applications covers

  • Cross-platform apps

One codebase for iOS and Android where it suits, and native code where the job demands it.

  • Scanning and capture

Barcodes, photos, signatures and location, captured in the field and sent to your systems.

  • Works offline

Keep working without a signal, and synchronize safely when the connection returns.

  • Approvals on the move

Approve requests, orders and expenses from a phone, with the details a decision needs.

  • Customer and loyalty apps

Ordering, tracking, offers and account details for the people who buy from you.

  • Secure access

Sign-in tied to your own accounts, with the data on the device protected.

Is it the right one?

Where it fits, and where it does not

We would rather you choose the right thing than the one we happen to be discussing.

A strong fit when

  • Staff in the field or on the shop floor work from paper or phone calls today.
  • Approvals wait for someone to get back to a desk.
  • Your customers would use an app, and not only a website, to deal with you.
  • Connectivity is patchy where the work happens.

Look at something else when

  • A responsive web application would do the job: it is cheaper to build and to maintain.
  • Few people would use it: a simpler tool, or a form, may serve better.
  • The system behind it does not offer an interface: that needs solving first (see API Development & System Integration).

How we deliver

How Abrimatt delivers Mobile Apps

Every engagement runs in phases, so the business sees progress and risks surface early. The timescale for each phase is set after an assessment, not before.

  1. Understand the work

Spend time with the people who will use the app, where they work, to see what they really need.

  2. Choose the approach

Decide between cross-platform and native, and between an app and a web application, on the merits.

  3. Design for the hands

Design screens for one hand, bright light and bad signal, and test them on real devices.

  4. Build and connect

Build the app and its connections to your systems, with offline behaviour designed in.

  5. Pilot

Put it in the hands of a small team, watch it in use and fix what they find.

  6. Distribute and maintain

Release it through the right channel for its audience, and keep it current with new devices and system versions.

Questions we are asked

Mobile Apps: questions and answers

Native or cross-platform?

Cross-platform suits most business apps and saves building twice. Native suits apps that depend heavily on the phone's own features. We recommend one for your case, and explain why.

Do we have to publish the app in the public app stores?

For apps aimed at the public, yes. Apps for your own staff can often be distributed privately through your device management tools. We set out the options for your case at the start.

Will it work without an internet connection?

It can. We design the parts that must work offline to store their work on the device and to synchronize afterwards, and we are clear about what cannot be done without a connection.

Start the conversation

Put the system in the hands of the people who need it most.

Tell us who works away from a desk, what they do on paper or by phone today, and where the signal is poor. We will show you what an app would change, and whether an app is the right answer.

  • Whether an app or a mobile web application is the better fit
  • What would have to work offline, and how it would synchronize
  • How the app would connect to your systems and be distributed

What happens next

  1. Tell us where you are

A short form or a call: what you run today, and what is getting in the way.

  2. We review it with you

A named consultant looks at your situation and talks through the options and what each would involve.

  3. You decide what comes next

You leave with a clear picture and a recommended scope you can take to your team.
