Modernization · step by step

Renew the software you depend on, without stopping the business to do it.

Ageing applications become risks: nobody understands the code, the platform is no longer supported and every change is slow. We assess what you have, decide with you what to keep, rewrite, replace or retire, and move it in steps, so that old and new run side by side until the business is ready. The aim is software that is secure, supported and maintainable, with documentation that did not exist before.

Capabilities

What Legacy System Modernization covers

  • Assessment and mapping

Read the code, the data and the dependencies, and find the risks and the parts that matter.

  • Choosing the path

For each part, decide whether to keep, refactor, rehost, rebuild, replace or retire it.

  • Rehosting and containers

Move an application to a supported platform, often with little change to the code.

  • Refactoring and rebuilding

Rework the code in steps, or rebuild the parts that cannot be saved, with tests that did not exist before.

  • Data migration

Move, clean and check the data, with reconciliation at each rehearsal.

  • Documentation

Write down what the system does and how it runs, so that it no longer lives in one person's head.

Is it the right one?

Where it fits, and where it does not

We would rather you choose the right thing than the one we happen to be discussing.

A strong fit when

  • A business-critical application runs on a platform that is no longer supported.
  • Only one or two people understand how it works.
  • Every change is slow and risky, and the backlog grows.
  • You are planning a move to the cloud and need to know what to take with you.

Look at something else when

  • The application still does its job and is supported: leave it, and keep it secure.
  • A packaged product now does what the application does: replace it, and we will help you migrate the data.
  • You want to rewrite everything at once: we advise stages, because a big switch carries the most risk.

How we deliver

How Abrimatt delivers Modernization

Every engagement runs in phases, so the business sees progress and risks surface early. The timescale for each phase is set after an assessment, not before.

  1. Assess

Review the application, its data, its dependencies and the risks of leaving it as it is.

  2. Decide

For each part, choose to keep, refactor, rehost, rebuild, replace or retire, and agree the order.

  3. Prepare

Add tests and monitoring around what exists, so that changes can be made safely.

  4. Move in steps

Move one part at a time, running old and new side by side.

  5. Migrate the data

Rehearse the data migration more than once, and reconcile before cutover.

  6. Retire and document

Switch off what is replaced, and leave behind documentation and a system your team can support.

Questions we are asked

Modernization: questions and answers

Do we have to rewrite everything?

Rarely. Often some parts can be kept, some reworked and some replaced. We assess first and recommend the smallest change that removes the risk.

Can the business keep working during the change?

That is the aim of working in steps. Old and new run side by side, and we cut over one part at a time, with a way back, rather than switching everything off on one day.

What happens to our data?

It is migrated, cleaned and checked, with reconciliation at each rehearsal so that you can see that nothing was lost. We agree what to keep, archive or delete, and we handle personal data with care.

Start the conversation

Take the risk out of the system nobody wants to touch.

Tell us which application you depend on, what it runs on and who understands it. We will say what we would keep, what we would change, and in what order.

  • An honest assessment of the application and its risks
  • A step-by-step path that keeps the business running
  • What the documentation and the handover would look like

What happens next

  1. Tell us where you are

A short form or a call: what you run today, and what is getting in the way.

  2. We review it with you

A named consultant looks at your situation and talks through the options and what each would involve.

  3. You decide what comes next

You leave with a clear picture and a recommended scope you can take to your team.
